Creating Glass Art: How to Etch Glass
March 12, 2019 3:06 am Leave your thoughtsEver since its development, glass has served many practical purposes, but it has also been used as an element of beauty and a work of art. From elegantly etched glassware to stained glass windows, glass has a long history of being a source of inspiration.
If you want glass in your home to serve dual purposes, you can easily turn plain pieces of glass into works of art through glass etching. At Santa Fe Glass & Mirror, we provide professional, high-quality commercial and residential glass etching in Santa Fe, NM. But if you want to try your hand at a little glass etching project of your own, it’s really not that hard. You can pick up glassware at your local department store or flea market and transform it into something really special, and here’s how.
To get started, you’ll need to pick up the following items:
- A plain glass object
- Utility knife
- Stick-on stencils
- Gloves and a long-sleeved shirt for safety
- Etching cream
- Sponge
- Paintbrush
You will need to start off with a clean surface, so remove any stickers from the glass surface and clean it thoroughly.
You can use stencils for a design or come up with your own. Tape can be used on a glass surface to create all sorts of patterns, such as stripes, dots, geometric patterns and more. However, if this is your first time, you may want to stick with a premade stencil until you get the hang of it. You can use a stencil to draw a design on paper, and then adhere the paper to the glass surface. You can also purchase adhesive stencils or stickers at any craft store.
You will need to protect your skin, so it’s important that you wear gloves and a long-sleeve shirt. You should also work in a well-ventilated area to avoid breathing in any toxic fumes.
Once you and your glass are prepped, it’s time to apply the etching cream. Using your paintbrush, liberally apply the etching cream to your stenciled design. Be very careful with the etching cream because it can literally etch almost any surface it touches.
Follow the instructions on the etching cream bottle and let the cream sit on the glass for the recommended amount of time.
Once you’ve waited the appropriate amount of time, it’s time to rinse the glass. Using a damp sponge, rub the stenciled area and remove any residual etching cream.
Finally, you can peel off the stencil and reveal your masterpiece! You will want to give the glass a final cleaning to remove any leftover residue before use.
